 -
2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
 -
¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder

1½ teaspoons baking soda
 -
1 teaspoon salt
 -
1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
 -
½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
 -
2 large eggs
 -
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
 -
1 cup (240ml) hot brewed coffee (or hot water for milder flavor)

For the Frosting
-
1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
 -
¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder
 -
4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
 -
¼ cup (60ml) heavy cream or milk
 -
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
 -
Pinch of salt

🔪 Directions
-
Preheat Oven
Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment. -
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. -
Add Wet Ingredients
Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat with a hand mixer for 2 minutes until smooth.
Stir in hot coffee — the batter will be thin (this creates a moist texture). -
Bake
Divide batter evenly between pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool completely before frosting. -
Make the Frosting
Beat butter and cocoa powder together until creamy.
Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, vanilla, and salt.
Beat until smooth and fluffy (add more milk for thinner consistency). -
Assemble the Cake
Place one cake layer on a plate, spread frosting evenly.
Add the second layer and frost the top and sides generously.
Finish with chocolate curls or drizzle, if desired.

-
Hot coffee enhances chocolate flavor — even if you’re not a coffee drinker!
